that I make mountains out of molehills. She’s right in some cases. But, when it comes to real data that affects real people and their ability to create a sustainable business that withstands time and gives them the life they want, I don’t see being too dramatic as a bad thing.
It’s often difficult to explain the importance of a business plan to creators who know they have a great product / voice / talent / vision. Most creative entrepreneurs don’t see the need because they know they have something to offer that people want.
Sure, you can use a basic AI-generated template to create a business plan. And yes, you can start a business without one. But why would you risk your amazing idea on such a risky strategy?
I’m going to offer an affordable solution toward the end of this post. Meanwhile, please indulge me as I throw out some very real statistics:
Goldman Sachs estimates that there are 50 million creators worldwide who are contributing to an industry that’s projected to grow from $250 billion in 2023 to $480 billion in 2027.
Women make up roughly 50% of the creative industry.
GOV.UK says that creative industries increased over 35.4% from 2010 to 2023 and drove growth at 32.3% compared to 22.3% of other industries in the UK economy.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that approximately 20% to 30% of all new businesses fail within the first year.
The percentage of creative businesses to survive the first year is one percent of the US national average, according to the Commerce Institute.
Business Dasher says that the percentage of new small businesses that have a solid business plan at startup is 33% as of January 3, 2026. They go on to say that 71% of the fastest growing businesses have a business plan in place, and that 58% of startups begin with a casual business plan.
Entrepreneurs who have a business plan are 260% more likely to launch.
Startups with a business plan increase their chances for growth by 30%.
70% of small businesses survive for the first five years if they follow a strategic business plan.
Why Do Small Businesses Fail?
If the stats I cited above don’t convince you, maybe this will. Small businesses fail for numerous reasons and many of them could be avoided by following a business plan.
The biggest reason for failure is because there wasn’t a market need for the product or service (42%) according to Founders Forum Group. Proper due diligence during business plan development would have uncovered this and allowed for a pivot correct it.
The next biggest reason (29%) was because the startup ran out of cash. Proper financial planning during business plan development would have found ways to mitigate this circumstance.
And 14% of startups failed because they did not have a solid marketing strategy at the start. Proper marketing and promotional plans would have been useful to execute a strong strategy from the beginning.
What’s the Solution?
The solution is simple. Work with a strategic business partner to create a solid business plan, even if you’re already operating your business. Marketing and promotion strategies are also critical to surviving the first five years.
Remember I said that you can use a basic AI-generated business plan? Here’s what AI says about that:
“AI-generated business plans offer speed, low cost, and structured drafts, ideal for brainstorming and initial brainstorming, but they often lack depth, accuracy, and emotional appeal. Human-written plans provide intuition, unique perspectives, and deep strategic insights, crucial for investor credibility but require significant time and financial investment.”
You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars for a business plan. I offer a detailed business plan specifically for creative entrepreneurs for $350.
How is a business plan so affordable?
Not to sound “cheesy”, but it’s affordable because SCORE has already laid out the process for you. From there, I created a questionnaire and worksheets that address every key aspect of a detailed business plan. The questions are straightforward, and your freestyle responses help me write the plan and maintain your authentic tone, intention and goals. Yes, it is a bit of upfront work on your end; and it’s worth the effort when you implement the plan and see that it works.
I also guarantee that your plan will be ready within seven (7) business days from the date I start it. The sooner you complete and return the questionnaire and worksheets, the sooner you’ll have your plan. Let's talk!
